Readers:

What is ISO certification?  What do ISO assurances mean to the public and to the auditee?  What exposure do Certification Bodies and ISO auditors have for conducting management system audits?  These questions have not been fully answered since we’ve been involved with ISO 9001 in 1987?

Well, TUV Rheinland issued safety certificates related to PIP silicon breast implants.  A French court has held the CB “neglected its duties of vigilance” and was liable for 50 M euros or $67.5 million for what the BBC News reported that “even a cursory inspection would have found problems.”  We think that ISO and all Certification Bodies will be reviewing their indemnification and liability protocols in the next few months.
