ISO/TC 176 developed a slide deck called ‘ISO 9001: 2015 Risk Based Thinking’ in December 2013. It points to the future of ISO 9001: 2015 and to quality in general.
RISK TO DO’S FROM ISO
According to the deck, an organization should adopt a risk driven approach to:

- Analyze the prioritize risks and opportunities in your organization.
- Plan actions to address the risks.
- Implement the plan to mitigate the risks.
- Check effectiveness of the actions.
- Learn from the experience through continual improvement.
TAKEAWAYS FROM THE DECK
So, a few early takeaways from the deck include:
- ISO TC 176 is very serious about risk.
- Risk is criterial to ISO 9001 (2015) CD but may not be modified in further iterations, such as DIS or FDIS
- ISO 31000 is the preferred guidance document for ISO 9001 (2015).
- Formal risk management is not required but inferred in ISO 9001 (2015).
- ISO guidance is confusing in terms of what is in scope and not in scope for risk.
YOUR NEXT STEPS

Why do we mention this? We wrote the first risk and process auditing book: Value Added Auditing. This is now available through ASQ.
We are also writing ISO 9001:2015 Risk FAQ Book. Three hundred answers to your most pressing ISO 9001 questions. You’ll be able to order the book through our company.
