#66 – #1 FEAR OF ALL PARENTS? – GREG HUTCHINS

Greg Hutchins pixWhat do you think the #1 fear of all parents is?

Cancer?  Going broke?  Losing a job?  Losing a house?

I think the #1 fear of all parents regardless if they’re in Bangladesh, Costa Rica, or India is:

Is my kid going to get a good job?

HOW’S MY KID GONNA GET A JOB?
The world of work is scary for everyone, but it is especially scary for younger people – the millenials.  They have high unemployment.  Huge college debt.  And, this is a worldwide phenomenon.

The NY Times and Thomas Friedman (World is Flat author) recently led a Next New World conference around the theme of ‘How’s My Kid Gonna Get a Job?‘  I think this is one of  the most important videos and conferences I’ve seen.

Why?  I’ve got a 15 year old.  I went to the Portland National College Fair last week.  It was jam packed.  With kids going to college?  Yes.  But, more parents, mom and dad and sometimes entire Asian families were there stressing over SAT’s, good colleges, admissions, and most importantly employable degrees.  And, most importantly:

How are we going to pay for this?

And, implciit:

Is my kid going to get a good job after this huge investment?

COME TO JESUS MEETING WITH YOUR KIDS
Now, comes the most important meeting you’re gonna have with your kids about money, work, career, jobs, and college.  It’s more important than the birds and bees.  Why?  They’ve already learned this online.

If you’re confused by what I mean by the Come to Jesus meeting with your kids.  The Urban Dictionary defines the meeting as:

“An epiphany in which one realizes the truth of a matter; a sudden, intuitive perception of or insight into the reality or essential meaning of something; coming clean and admitting failures; realizing the true weight or impact of a negative situation or fact; acknowledgment that one must get back to core values; moment of realization; an aha moment; moment of decision; moment of truth; critical moment; moment of reassessment of priorities; turning point; life-changing moment.”

Do this now or you may be supporting your kids into their 30’s.  Don’t believe me.  Talk to your friends.
