Fear and Caution Under VUCA – Greg Hutchins

Greg Hutchins pixRobert J. Samuelson, the op ed writer, wrote a piece this week called ‘Why America’s Recovery is Feeble.”

The numbers are stunning.  The recession officially ended in mid – 2009. The US annual growth rate since the recession has been 2%.  Similar recoveries average 4.5% growth.   We all know what this means.  Fewer jobs.  Less capital and consumer spending.  Higher unemployment.  Fiscal cliff approaching fast.

Why is the economy so tepid?  Samuelson believes:  “It’s hard to avoid a sneaking suspicion that the people at the top don’t know what they’re doing?”

Hard indictment.  Then, there’s the US and Europe.  The US is facing the fiscal cliff and Europe is seriously talking about Greece and other countries defaulting on their government debt.  And, it’s happening all over the world.

Public policy makers don’t know now to solve problems and make the hard decisions under VUCA: Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity.
