Every once in a while I do an experiment. I pull out a newspaper and check out the headlines. I count the number of them that deal with VUCA or Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, or Ambiguity or another way to say deal with risk.
So, I pulled out the January 26, 2013 NY Times Business Section. These are the articles on the page B1:
- “Maker Hid Data About Design Flaw in Hip Implants, Records Show”
- “Japan’s Role in Making Batteries from Boeing”
- “PepsiCo Will Halt AdditiveUse in Gatorade”
- “Disputing A Charge On Your Credit Card”
- “JPMorganis Risk Officer Takes a Leave”
All the above are articles about risk. The only article not about risk is:
“Passing the Keys: Car Sharing Services Hit a Growth Spurt Offering a Wider Range of Amenities”
Eighty-Three percent (83%) of the headlines dealt with risk topics. This is today’s state of the world, where the prism of almost all things deal with risk.
Check it out sometime.
