#10 – MY COMMUNICATION TAKEAWAYS FROM FASTING – UMBERTO TUNESI

Umberto Tunesi pixEaster just passed.  We Catholics have a new Pope, therefore the Fast rule had to be implemented, more strictly than ever.  So, here are some thoughts on ISO during my fast.

I know of two basic inputs and outputs to risk-controlling Communication processes:

  1. The Italian movie director Michelangelo Antonioni, nicknamed the movie director of in-communicability.
  2. Our ISO Sherpas guide us to the highest quality mountains with just two and half lines out of out of some eighty pages with the mere mention of “documentation.”

Antonioni in his well known movies illustrates and reminds us of the risks of poor communication.    The ISO Sherpas just advise us that communication processes shall be appropriate to ensure the Quality Management System be effective.

Thank you for the warning, dear ISO Sirs: but when I’ll climb the Mount Everest or K2 for the first time in my life, how will I ensure that “my Quality Management System is effective”?

Communication processes are naturally instrumental to every and all life-related processes; but there’s a catch.  In our modern men’s spoken dictionary, communication – or information, for what matters – equals propaganda.

No positive equation, therefore.  Not exchange, not comparison, not mutuality – not communication, therefore.

Take ISO/TS 16949 third party audits, for example: highly educated, highly qualified auditors diligently fill their Turtle and SWOT forms; but when it comes to auditing communication processes for effectiveness  …  it’s just like “Smoke and Mirrors.”.

My veterinary doctor once told me that I had to communicate with my pets – cats and dogs – in their own language, not mine.

The highest communication risk we run in every day, many times a day, is that we don’t listen; that is,  we are deaf to what people want or need.

DON’T LISTEN TO THE VOICE OF RISK
For some perverse reasons, we have to talk, to speak, to appear, not to see. And for those very reasons, we don’t listen to the “Voice of Risk”, we watch at, but we don’t see.

What’s even worse, is that this is millennia-old Mankind history.

Some of us flew to the Moon, some others went down to more than 10,000 meters deep under the seas – there are many more examples of how Mankind masters Technology.

But not Himself.

If I were a Leader – all capitals … – I would first audit my Organization’s communication processes for Effectiveness, long before its Quality Management System processes.
