Greg Hutchins pixIn 2000, I wrote Risk Management: Is It the Future of Quality Management? for ASQ’s Quality Progress.  We’ve been evangelizing this concept a long time.

Why do I bring this up?

We’ve been evangelizing the mantra for 15 years.  We felt so strongly that we have a  have a registered trademark on the Future of Quality: Risk®

RM and ERM Data Points

Well, now the above seems to be conventional wisdom.  Let’s look at some data points.

Well, let’s look at these data points:

  • 1.2 million ISO 9001 certified companies have to adopt Risk Based Thinking and some form of risk assessment starting this month.
  • 400,000 ISO 14001 certified companies will adopt risk.
  • ISO has adopted Risk Based Thinking and has elevated it to the level of importance as PDCA.
  • More than 20 sectors have adopted risk management.
  • Many sectors are making ERM statutory.

So, Is risk management the Future of Quality?
