WHAT is the ISO 31000 risk management standard ?
ISO 31000 is the only internationally-recognized ISO standard in risk management.
WHO has developed it ?
Up to 60 experts from different sectors (industry, health & safety, quality management, banking & finance, etc.), representing 30 countries, worked within an ISO international working group called the ISO TC 262 committee – see : http://www.iso.org/iso/iso_technical_committee?commid=629121
WHEN was it published ?
It has been published in November 2009
WHICH COUNTRY has adopted it ?
Up to 40 countries have adopted ISO 31000 as their national risk management standard, including in the USA under the label ANSI/ASSE/ ISO 31000
Based on informal information collected by G31000, here is the list of countries (situation on August 2011):

WHO should refer to it ?
ISO 31000 can be used by any public, private or community enterprise, association, group or individual. Therefore, ISO 31000: 2009 is not specific to any industry or sector.
What are the benefits ?
- A single global reference for stakeholders
- The only internationally recognized ISO standard in risk management
- Adopted by most countries as their national risk management standard
- Based on the 20 years long experience of existing risk management standards such as AS/NZS4360, the Australian/New-Zealand standard
- Can apply to any activity or domain in any organisation, any size – public or private
- Provides an “umbrella” for many recognised standards and guidelines that refer to risk management
- Voluntary application, non prescriptive, with no legal requirement and specifically not intended for certification
- Robust and simple to apply
- Opportunity for an organisation to review their existing risk management practices
- Promotes business performance and is not a bureaucratic compliance/reporting system
- Text is concise (24 pages) and clearly written
- What are the specific benefits for every sector?
- Provides a simple structure for regulatory requirements.
- Proposes a vocabulary, a set of principles, a framework and a process for the management of risks across departments.
- ü Risk management is not a function of a single department any more, but may be embedded in organization’s decision making processes.
- HOW to get my company certified in ISO 31000 ?
- The standard clearly states that “ISO 31000 is not intented to be used for the purpose of certification”. Therefore, there is no certification of organisations.
What is G31000 ?
Launched in May 2012, G31000, the Global Institute for Risk Management Standards, is a non-for-profit international association dedicated to raising awareness about the ISO 31000 risk management standard. It supports events, training and certification of individuals through a network of contacts, worldwide.
HOW to get individuals certified in ISO 31000 ?
The Global Institute for Risk Management Standards will introduce the C31000™ Certificate which will serve as the international standard for validation of the understanding and knowledge on the ISO 31000 Risk Management Standard. We are currently building up a network of G31000-certified trainers delivering a 3-day course+examination on the ISO 31000 standard.
